The humble petition of the Chinese inhabitants of Singapore

Petitioners with profound respect submissively begs to state to your honour that they have for this considerable time occupied the ground situated to the west of Mr Scott’s hill as their place of interment, without obtrusion of any kind. Petitioners with heartfelt grief begs to state to your honour that since lately the Chuliah Bandymen took among themselves & made a practice to enter into the burying ground (without the least regard to the dead,) and dig earth out of it, for the express purpose of selling, and they have proceeded so far, in this unlawful practice, that several coffins are (dug) out of their abode. Petitioners have sometime ago addressed a petition to the hon’ble the Resident Councillor stating the above circumstances & that gentleman was kind enough to say, that we may occupy the ground as heretofore, and the Chuliah Bandymen will no more enter the ground. Petitioners humbly beg to state to your honour that the said practice still exercised among them at the petitioners’ burying ground, and give no repose to the dead, which is an act much against the religious custom of our tribe. Petitioners therefore with profound respect, humbly beg your honour will be pleased to take into kind consideration the above circumstances and allow petitioners a grant for the said ground, that they may occupy it without further interruption. In which act of favor Petitioners as in duty bound shall ever pray.

…Read a Petition from the Chinese Inhabitants, praying that the Castemen may be prohibited from excavating their Burial Place.

Ordered that the Petition be referred to the Supt of Police with directives that immediate measures be taken for preventing the practice complained of. With reference to this subject, it is further ordered that the parties be accompanied to police and recommended to construct a proper fence round the Burial ground, taking care not to inter any more bodies so close to the Road.

华民请愿书

请愿人深怀敬意，恭顺地向阁下陈情，他们在这相当长的时间里一直在斯科特先生小山以西拥有一块坟地，一直没有受到任何的干扰。请愿人沉痛地向您投诉，最近有注辇人闯入坟地（对死者无丝毫敬意），挖土出售牟利。由于他们这种不法行为，至今已有几个棺木被挖出来。

不久前，请愿人曾经向参政司提交一份请愿书，陈述了上述情况。参政司好心相告，我们可以一如既往占用坟地，注辇人不得擅入。请愿者禀告阁下，注辇人依旧继续闯入请愿人的坟地，让死者不得安息，这种行为违反了我们的宗教习俗。因此，请愿人谨以崇高的敬意，谦卑地请您考虑上述情况，并授予地契，使他们可以在不被进一步干扰的情况下占用该坟地。

如俯允所请，请愿人必尽忠克守为祈。

……审阅一份华人住民祈求禁止印度人在其墓地挖掘的请愿书。

兹命令将请愿书提交给警司，并指示立即采取措施防止所投诉的不法行为。关于这一问题，还进一步下令双方在陪同下前往警察局，并建议在坟地周围筑起一道适当的围栏，注意不要在离公路这么近的地方埋葬更多的死者。
