In commemoration of Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan’s contribution to tertiary education in Singapore (Plaque for The SHHK Building, NTU)

The Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan (SHHK) Building marks the historic contribution of local communities toward Singapore’s tertiary education development.

In 1953, Mr Tan Lark Sye, President of SHHK, mooted the idea of establishing Nanyang University. SHHK donated 211.66 hectares (523 acres) of land at Jurong Road for the building of the campus and Mr Tan personally donated S$5 million. Nanyang Universityreceived tremendous support from communities in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

Mr Tan Lark Sye became the first chairman of Nanyang University, which was founded in 1955. The campus was officially opened in1958. The Nanyang Technological Institute (NTI) was subsequently inaugurated on the same grounds in 1981. In 1991, NTI merged with the National Institute of Education to form Nanyang Technological University.

1953年，新加坡福建会馆主席陈六使先生倡议创办南洋大学，他不单以个人名义率先认捐500万元作为建校基金，还带动福建会馆献出裕廊路211.66公顷（523英亩）土地作为大学校址。陈六使先生的建校倡议获得本地以至整个东南亚各地华社的热烈响应，各阶层人士有钱出钱，有力出力，掀起了一场波澜壮阔的办学运动。

南洋大学于1955年创办，由陈六使先生出任南洋大学执行委员会第一任主席。南大校园在1958年正式开幕。1981年，南洋理工学院在南洋大学校址成立。1991年，南洋理工学院进行重组，将国立教育学院纳入旗下，更名为南洋理工大学。
