The Ching-gay, or Toh Peh Kong procession of the Hokien Chinese yesterday was one of the most gorgeous ever seen here. The Hokiens hold their procession only once every three years, while the Teh Chews, with whom is amalgamated the Kehs, Macaos, and Hylams, hold theirs annually. The procession yesterday paraded through nearly every street on the Chinese part of the town, on the way to and from the Joss House of the New Harbour Road, to which their Toh Peh Kong, or Datoh is carried in State, and then brought back to the temple in town. Crowds of carriages blocked all the side streets along the line of the procession, and thousands on foot occupied both sides of the way, to witness the pageant, which was very grand and imposing.
